What passwords are chosen by millions of users: the NordPass report.
Passwords are the key to our personal information, but they are often too simple and predictable, which makes them an easy target for hackers. The company NordPass, which specializes in creating and protecting passwords, has published its annual report on the most frequently encountered passwords. The report shows that many users are not creative in choosing passwords.
NordPass, in cooperation with independent researchers, analyzed 4.3 terabytes of data from public sources. At the same time, the company emphasizes that personal data of users was not affected. An analysis of data from 35 countries and eight different types of platforms showed that most passwords are simple numerical sequences.
The most common password was "123456", which was recorded more than 4.5 million times. According to NordPass, it can be hacked in less than a second. The password "admin" is also easily hacked and has been fixed more than 4 million times. They are followed by numerical sequences such as "1234", "12345678" or "123456789", which are also widely distributed.
The list also includes words like "password", which takes less than a second to crack, and "UNKNOWN", which takes 17 minutes to crack.
The password "P@ssw0rd", despite its apparent originality, is also cracked in less than a second and was used 135,424 times.
Most popular passwords are numerical sequences. However, if you slide your finger along the top row of keyboard keys, you get "qwertyuiop" — this password was used 79,434 times.
NordPass also analyzes passwords depending on the country. For example, "123456", "password" and "admin" remain the most popular in the USA. But the 16th most popular password "sh**bird" was used 4,230 times and it takes five minutes to crack it.
It is noted that different platforms affect password creation habits. Yes, the fourth most popular password on e-commerce sites such as Amazon is "amazon".
For streaming sites, one of the most popular passwords is "netflix". According to NordPass, streaming sites have the least secure passwords compared to other websites.
This year's trends are not much different from previous NordPass reports. Passwords like "12345" and "password" are always among the most common.
NordPass claims that with the development of technologies, passwords are becoming more difficult to crack, but threats in the form of malicious software are still relevant. The company recommends creating complex passwords with a length of 20 characters, using both uppercase and lowercase letters, and also avoid using dates of birth or other easily guessed data and create different passwords for different platforms.
