For the theft of cash intruders used special software.
Law enforcement officers of Belarus detained four Minsk residents suspected of attempting to steal funds from ATMs with the help of new malware.
The incident became known after the representatives of one of the banks contacted the Main Internal Affairs Directorate of Minsk due to the fact that drilled holes were found at a number of ATMs, while the cassettes with bills were left intact. As it turned out, these were traces of the unsuccessful theft of money.
According to Kirill Vyatkin, head of the High Technologies Department for the Disclosure of Crimes in the Sphere of High Technologies of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Belarus, the attackers used special software to steal cash. To launch it, it was necessary to connect a cash dispenser to the electronic systems, and it was necessary to damage the ATM cabinet.
An illegal program was offered in underground forums and was accompanied by a video showing step by step the process of hacking. As software developers assured, the method allows to completely empty an ATM. The suspects purchased the software for several thousand dollars and tried to use it for their intended purpose, but they could not finish the job.
The criminals were detained in early July. A criminal case under Art. 14 and 4 of Art. 212 of the Criminal Code of Belarus (attempted theft by using computer equipment on a large scale) and under Part 1 of Art. 218 of the Criminal Code of Belarus (intentional damage to property).
